What is NLP?
Neuro - Nervous system through which experience is received and processed through the five senses
Linguistic - Language and non-verbal communication systems through which neural representations are coded, ordered, and given meaning
Programming
- The ability to organise our communication and neurological systems to achieve specific desired goals and results.
NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler - a student at the University of California in Santa Cruz, and John Grinder an Assistant Professor of Linguistics. They were mentored by the famous social scientist and cyberneticist Gregory Bateson.
They modelled the most successful psychotherapists of the time - Fritz Perls and his work with Gestalt therapy, Virginia Satir and her work with Family Therapy and the father of 20th century Hypnotherapy, Milton Erickson. They found that they could distil the best elements of what people do and make them accessible to all. To date NLP has been used in a number of different areas of human communication such as education and learning, negotiation, persuasion, sales, team-building, leadership, decision making, health, medicine and athletic performance.
There are some basic presuppositions of the NLP model
- The ability to change the process by which we experience reality is more often valuable than changing the content of our experience of reality.
- The meaning of the communication is the response you get.
- All distinctions human beings are able to make concerning our environment and our behaviour can be usefully represented through the visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, olfactory (smell), and gustatory (taste) senses.
- The resources an individual needs in order to effect a change are already within them.
- The map is not the territory.
- The positive worth of the individual is held constant, while the value and appropriateness of internal and/or external behaviour is questioned.
- There is a positive intention motivating every behaviour, and a context in which every behaviour has value.
- Feedback vs. Failure - All results and behaviours are achievements, whether they are desired outcomes for a given task/context, or not.
How can NLP help me?
As a Master Practitioner of NLP, trained by Paul McKenna and Richard Bandler, among others, I have learned many of the skills required to effect change in those who want it. Some of the areas NLP is particularly helpful with are in
- overcoming phobias
- dealing with anxiety
- reducing stress
- low self esteem
- managing anger
- poor concentration
- handling criticism or flattery
- developing interpersonal skills and general communication
- stopping unwanted habits or behaviours such as smoking or over-eating.
For continuous personal development I maintain my learning and understanding of the field by being a member of an NLP Practice group and assisting on training sessions, so that as new techniques are discovered they can be practised and understood fully.

Coaching
So what is a coach?
Well, one of the standard British definitions of a coach is this:
"a single-decker vehicle, especially one that is comfortably equipped and used for longer journeys."
It may seem a little bit strange at first, but a coach, like the vehicle mentioned above, is comfortably equipped and trained to help you get wherever you want to go.
Life Coaching covers all areas of your life, so that every avenue is considered. By asking open questions and actively listening fully to your thoughts and ideas, answers can be found from within you.
Coaching is not advice, therapy or counselling, but it will enable you to find your own solutions.
Coaching is objective, something that you are not able to get from those nearest and dearest.
Coaching does require commitment from the coach and the coachee as well as large amounts of motivation. One thing absolutely guaranteed in life (apart from death and taxes of course!) is CHANGE. You need to have a desire to change, and it may be that you are not even sure what it is you would like to change, just that you know things need to be different in some way, and you have chosen now to take some action. Therefore time and effort will be required so that changes can take place.
You will be responsible for creating your own results.
The essence of coaching is getting you to keep fresh and be alert to opportunities that are out there. All people seek clarity in their lives – and with the benefit of coaching it will enable you to become more focused. As a coach, I am fully committed to your development and I demonstrate this by getting you to sign a commitment contract with me to ensure that we both dedicate the necessary time and resource so that you know how to achieve your goals, whatever your goals are. I can also help you improve on your personal performance and development and enhance your quality of communication.
It is to be borne in mind that coaching is not a quick fix solution to your problems, it is a journey. Quite usually clients will need weekly sessions for the first 3 -4 sessions, to learn about themselves, and then sessions may be spaced further apart to allow for more actions towards goals.
How do I do this?
- By actively listening to you
- By asking the appropriate questions
- By getting you to focus on possibilities
- By ensuring you can have a balanced view
- By getting you to understand how effective your own communication is already and helping you can improve it further
- By having over 21 years experience in a people rich business with a background in training and development
- By being able to understand it from your perspective
I always offer a complimentary initial coaching session, so that you can experience what coaching could be like for you.
